VPN vs Proxy

VPNs, virtual private networks, and proxies are online tools that protect network privacy and online security. We will review the key differences, similarities, and advantages of using VPNs and proxy services.

What is a VPN?

A VPN, or virtual private network, is an extensible authentication protocol that encrypts a user’s IP address to protect their data, such as browsing information and location. Plenty of VPN services are available for users, but ultimately, VPNs will create a protected channel for users to browse the internet, which is secure against external attacks. VPN services may be offered at no cost but lack features, such as limited IP address locations. However, this lack of features will not impact the effectiveness of securing the users’ data.

What is a Proxy?

A proxy is similar to a VPN in that it routes internet traffic through a different server, and in the process, it masks IP addresses and locations. However, a significant difference between a proxy and a VPN is that a proxy service does not encrypt data.

Advantages of Using a VPN

A VPN has some major advantages that a proxy service does not have. Below are some of those advantages.

  • A VPN encrypts data traffic.
  • A VPN hides IP addresses.
  • A VPN can bypass geographic restrictions.
  • A VPN secures all traffic.

Advantages of Using a Proxy

Although a VPN has some significant advantages over a proxy service, such as data encryption and security, there are some advantages to using a proxy service.

  • A proxy service is usually faster than a VPN.
  • A proxy service is usually more cost-effective than a VPN.

The Winner

Although a VPN may be slower and more expensive than a proxy service, it is the clear winner because it provides the security and encryption to secure data against cyberattacks.
